Nigerian Court Orders Killing Of Cockerel Causing Noise Pollution

An individual named Malam Yusuf has been given a deadline of Friday to kill his cockerel by a magistrate court in Kano State, Northern Nigeria, for making excessive noise.

Chief Magistrate Halima Wali granted the ruling following a lawsuit filed by Yusuf’s neighbor who claimed that the continual crowing of the cockerel prevents him from getting any sleep.

While recognizing that his rooster had a tendency to crow loudly, Malam Yusuf asked the court to delay the decision until Friday.

In all of Nigeria, it is legal to keep animals and birds in households where they are raised for food and for sale. Nonetheless, owners of wild animals are required to get a license in accordance with the Wild Animals (Captive Animals) Rules (1975).

According to the Chief Magistrate, the domestic bird is a nuisance to the neighborhood. As a result, the Chief Magistrate reportedly ordered Yusuf to kill the cockerel by Friday or face a fine from the court.

The sounds we hear on a daily basis are familiar to the majority of us. Loud music, television, cell phone conversations, traffic, and even dogs barking in the middle of the night have all but become a part of urban life, and they hardly ever bother us.

The sound of the television or the noise of a crowing cockerel, on the other hand, crosses the line from plain noise to noise pollution when it prevents you from sleeping through the night.
