The Edo State Police Command has detained Aisha Suleiman, 16, who is suspected of poisoning her ex-boyfriend, Emmanuel, and four other young boys in the Afashio community of Etsako West Local Government Area.
This tragedy, which has devastated the town, was discovered on the morning of October 26 by Emmanuel’s father, Mr. Elogie Ezekiel, who discovered the five victims’ motionless bodies in his son’s flat.
Ezekiel reportedly arrived at Emmanuel’s home about 6:30 a.m. and was met with a heartbreaking sight. The first body he discovered was that of Nurudeen, a young man found unconscious in the corridor. When he entered the bedroom, he discovered his son, Emmanuel, 19, and Emmanuel’s girlfriend, Ada Samuel, 16, lying together on the bed, both appearing lifeless.
Two of Emmanuel’s buddies and siblings, Samuel and Jeffrey Ayegwalo, were found comatose in the sitting room. All five victims were transported to the hospital and confirmed dead upon arrival.
According to community reports, the group recently devoured a pot of pepper soup allegedly cooked by Suleiman, raising suspicions of purposeful poisoning.
Three days after the finding, authorities received complaints of an effort by young men in the town to lynch Suleiman, who was supposedly identified as the prime suspect.
Officers from the Jattu Division were sent to intervene, saving her from imminent mob violence and transporting her securely to the police station.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Moses Yamu said that the case has been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police CP Umoru Ozigi has ordered a complete investigation, urging officers to pursue all avenues to determine the exact cause of death.
He also advised the people to avoid mob justice, assuring them that the police will conduct a thorough investigation.
CP Ozigi stated, “We ask the public to allow our officers to perform their duties. Justice will be pursued with diligence, and we urge the community to cooperate with law enforcement.”
