Sit-At-Home: Umuahia Records 90% Shutdown As They Remember Victims Of Raid On Kanu’s Home

Sit-At-Home: Umuahia Records 90% Shutdown As They Remember Victims Of Raid On Kanu’s Home

Residents in Umuahia, Abia State’s capital, stayed indoors on Tuesday in full compliance with the Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) sit-at-home command.

A sit-at-home campaign was launched by IPOB on September 14, 2017, in solidarity with victims of the military raid on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Afaraukwu Ibeku country home during Operation Python Dance ii. The campaign was directed at people all across “Biafra land.”

During the attack, no fewer than 28 people, largely Biafra agitators who were acting as human shields at the compound where Kanu was residing following his release from jail confinement, were reportedly slain.

Since then, the military has denied any role in the raid, which received widespread international criticism.

Except for intermittent human and vehicular activities, some of the main roads observed by a Daily Post correspondent were almost vacant.

Youths were also witnessed converting sections of the streets into makeshift football pitches.

Because the stores on the street were locked down, business activity was completely halted.

The always-bustling Isi Gate relief market was similarly a shadow of its former self, however, several perishables and food vendors were seen responding to a few desperate customers.

As of the time of submitting this report, no banks have opened for business.

Few people were spotted talking and eating in groups in front of their balconies.

One of the locals informed the Daily Post correspondent that “the sit-at-home thing is becoming confusing,” and urged IPOB to think about the people’s economic and other ramifications.

Yesterday we sat at home, and today I called a friend who told me he had gone to look for what to eat, that’s why I decided to also come out,” a resident who is a furniture maker said, requesting anonymity.

As of the time of filing this report, there had been no incidents with security agencies.
