St. Luke The Evangelist

St. Luke The Evangelist

When St. Paul was left on his own, St. Luke was a reliable companion and like a true physician, he took care of him and attended to his needs. When you read and meditate on the gospel of Luke and the acts of the apostles, one can easily notice the special influence of the Holy Spirit and Paul’s reliable assistance in bringing the word of God to the gentiles.

No doubt, St. Luke was a gentile with a difference. He was gifted with special skills. Perhaps, he was a dedicated disciple among the seventy-two called by Christ in today’s gospel. As a companion especially in his confinementa, they traced carefully the history of salvation right from its beginning to Christ, the High Priest, who offers himself to all humanity.

This mission and the message of Christ to the world through his disciples as carried out by Luke goes on through all the earth till this very day. We see the urgency of Christ’s message of peace as captured in the Gospel of today by St. Luke. The harvest is rich but the laborers are few.

We too are the living letters the Word of God. We are the witnesses and carriers of the Good News. We are the peacemakers and healers that carry hope and the gospel values to the ends of the earth.

It is written in our hearts and minds and it has to be recognized in our lives through acts of love, compassion, charity, humility, and selfless sacrifice for the improvement of other people’s lives. As the faithful servants of God, we too will one day share in the hope that has been revealed in Heaven where Christ is.

Just like St. Luke and St. Paul we too will go through trials and temptations but do not be discouraged. Take it to the Lord in prayer.
The Lord sometimes suffers his people to be driven into a corner that they may experimentally know how necessary he is to them. Ungodly children, when they show us our own powerlessness against the depravity of their hearts, drive us to flee to the strong for strength, and this is a great blessing to us.

Whatever our morning’s need may be, let it like a strong current bear us to the ocean of divine love. Jesus can soon remove our sorrow, he delights to comfort us. Let us hasten to him while he waits to meet us.

As we go about our daily task. Let us not seek consolations from God but rather let us seek the God of all consolations. Let us be humble and work silently active as we should with all the capacities we have. In heaven, All will be revealed.

All will be made clear and then there will be no secret anymore. May our Mother Mary who had no consolation at the foot of the cross be our consolation through Christ Our Lord.

St. Luke, the Evangelist- pray for us. Amen.
