United Women’s Team Don’t Want Mason Greenwood At The Club

The prospective comeback of Mason Greenwood to Manchester United is apparently upsetting the Women’s team at the club.

Greenwood was accused of one count of attempted rape, one count of using coercive behaviour, and one count of assault resulting in actual bodily harm in October 2022.

However, it was revealed earlier in February that the Crown Prosecution Service will dismiss the charges against him, citing the appearance of fresh information that rendered conviction no longer a realistic prospect.

Greenwood has scored 35 goals in 129 games for United since his debut in March 2019.

The club suspended him on January 30 of last year, not long after his arrest by Greater Manchester Police.

And according to The Athletic, several members of the women’s team are “deeply uncomfortable” with the likelihood of the player joining the men’s squad again.

The men’s team is said to feel the same way, feeling uneasy about the possibility of the 21-year-old returning because they worry it will hinder their development.

Since Greenwood hasn’t been found guilty or not guilty of the allegations that were dropped, he is technically eligible to play for United.

However, it is uncertain whether the player would return to the Red Devils squad, given that he was only suspended while receiving full pay from the club in January.

Natalie Burrell, the founder of the Manchester United Women’s Supporters’ Club, has stated that she does not want to see Greenwood wear the renowned red shirt of Manchester United ever again.

Burrell said that permitting the forward to rejoin the team would negate the efforts of organizations like Her Game Too, which encourage female participation in football.

Burrell said to the Athletic, “I don’t think he should play again for Manchester United. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. They need to make a statement and letting him back would be the worst thing they could do.

“It would set our club back in terms of what we’re trying to do with our women’s team and campaigns like Her Game Too, which are trying to encourage women to play and watch football.

“I definitely don’t want him back and I’m confident they won’t, whether that’s through selling him in the summer I don’t know.

“People just think they’re going to write it off (his contract runs until 2025 and has the option of another year) and maybe they will, that would be a real statement, but I’d be surprised. If they just sold him it’d be a good statement too.

“I just don’t want to see him training. I don’t want to see him in a (United) kit. I don’t want to see him ever coming out at Old Trafford again.”

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
