14-Year-Old Boy Allegedly Commits Suicide With Shoelace

Over the weekend, a 14-year-old boy committed suicide in Calabar, Cross River State, using a shoelace as a string.

Donald, the boy, was an Ekondo Street resident who lived with his grandmother.

He allegedly committed suicide on Saturday, October 28, by tying a shoelace around his neck.

According to Vanguard, Eyo, a friend of the 14-year-old, said the boy went to buy fufu (a local cassava meal) after finishing his morning chores on Saturday. That was the last time anyone saw him alive.

“After going to buy the fufu, nobody heard from him again until about 12 noon when the grandmother called a carpenter to help him bring the boy down from where he was leaning on the wall with a rope on his neck.”

He claimed that the carpenter inquired as to what had occurred, but the woman said nothing, prompting the carpenter to flee the premises to raise the alarm.

”Nobody heard any noise from the compound until the carpenter ran out and raised the alarm and we all went inside the compound. The boy’s legs were on the floor, there was no table or object which the boy climbed on to fix his head on the noose and the string round his neck was just a shoelace,” Donald stated.

“The police did not touch the boy and others who were called to take the boy down did not touch the body and when the woman was asked to take the boy down she refused.”

The incident has been accessed by police from the Atakpa Police Station, and an investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department has begun.
