18-Year-Old Mother Released From Jail On Bail Over Pity

Miss Beauty Obi, an 18-year-old mother of a two-week-old baby, was freed from Warri Custodial Centre, also known as Okere Prison, on Monday, June 26, 2023.

For compassionate reasons, the Chief Judge of Delta State, Hon. Justice Tessy Diai, granted bail to the teenage inmate.

Justice Dial had responded to an appeal by Mr Edo Joseph Lucky, the deputy controller of the Warri Custodial Center, by showing compassion to Obi, who had given birth to her child via caesarean section.

Lucky had described the plight of the 18-year-old mother and her boyfriend, who had been admitted to the Custodial Centre when she was pregnant.

According to the Custodial Centre’s deputy controller, when Beauty was scheduled to give birth, she was brought to the Warri Central Hospital, where she gave birth via caesarean section, but the infant was detained in an incubator for one week before being reunited with the mother in custody.

Lucky further revealed that the jail authority spent N1,000 per hour for the one week the girl was in the incubator, which he said prompted his request to the Chief Judge to give her bail so she could go to her parents for proper treatment.

The Chief Judge, who passionately assisted Beauty Obi with N20,000, granted her bail in the sum of N250,000 with one surety in the same sum, with the surety, who must be a resident of the trial court’s jurisdiction, deposing to an affidavit of means and providing his national identity card NIN number.

According to the teen mother, who is from Obingwa in Imo State, the cops apprehended her and her boyfriend at a spot where he was ready to sell a stolen phone.

The adolescent mother, whose mother is from Kwale in Delta State’s Ndokwa West Local Government Area, claimed she was aware her boyfriend stole the phone.
