A major political tremor is rippling through Nigeria’s opposition ranks as indications mount that Senator Victor Umeh, Senator Tony Nwoye, and several House of Representatives members may dump the African Democratic Congress, ADC, to follow Peter Obi into the National Democratic Congress, NDC. The potential defection comes amid deepening uncertainty in the ADC and signals a fresh bid to build a new coalition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Multiple political sources in Abuja and Anambra confirm that Obi and former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso have already signed relevant documents with the NDC, with an official defection announcement expected Monday. NDC Deputy Publicity Secretary Abdulmumin Abdulsalam disclosed that discussions with Obi and Kwankwaso have been ongoing with the National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, and hinted at a possible alliance. The NDC is being positioned as a “clean” alternative, free of the entrenched godfathers and internal infighting currently plaguing the ADC.

Senators Umeh and Nwoye, both of whom formally registered for the ADC in Anambra just weeks ago alongside Obi, are now weighing the NDC option as the ADC’s structure appears increasingly aligned with Atiku Abubakar’s network. A source close to Obi’s camp said the former Labour Party candidate concluded the ADC “is not formidable” due to “numerous litigations” and fears the ticket will be skewed, with the NDC promising an “unchallenged presidential ticket”. Obi’s supporters are expected to move en masse if he defects.

The shift could also sweep up several federal lawmakers. At the Enugu declaration where Obi announced his ADC move in December 2025, those present included Sen. Victor Umeh, Sen. Tony Nwoye, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe, and Rep. Afam Ogene. Political leaders at that event publicly pledged support and referred to Obi as “their leader”. With Obi now eyeing the NDC, insiders say many of those lawmakers are “quietly weighing their options” as ADC court cases linger.

For the NDC, the entry of Obi, Umeh, Nwoye, and allied Reps members would instantly transform it from an obscure party into a national force. Obi and Kwankwaso were reportedly received at the NDC national secretariat in Abuja and issued membership cards, accompanied by Victor Umeh and other associates. Party officials insist they are “open and ready to accommodate new entrants”, even as ADC officials claim they are unaware of any mass defection plan.

With legal battles unresolved and 2027 alliances shifting rapidly, the coming days may redraw Nigeria’s opposition map. Obi’s camp has maintained he “will be on the ballot” for president, though his platform remains fluid. Should Umeh, Nwoye, and the Reps members follow him to the NDC, it would mark a repeat of 2022’s Labour Party surge — but with higher stakes and a broader coalition targeting both Tinubu and the ADC.
