At least 28 people were killed in an auto accident in the Onipetesi region of the Ore/Lagos route in Odigbo local government area, Ondo State.
The tragic collision involving two commercial buses happened on Saturday night, February 1, 2025.
Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the occurrence, stating that the accident occurred when two commercial buses collided head on and erupted into flames.
According to the FRSC chairman, early investigations revealed that one of the vehicles drove against traffic.
Ibitoye asked drivers to be cautious, maintain their vehicles properly, and avoid irresponsible driving.
“No fewer than 28 people were burnt beyond recognition on Saturday evening in a fatal accident caused by head-on collision of two vehicles in Mile 49, on the Ore-Lagos expressway,” he said.
“The accident was caused by excessive speeding and traffic violation which led to a head-on collision by the two vehicles while 28 passengers out of 30 passengers lost their lives tragically.
“It’s unfortunate that 28 lives were burnt beyond recognition in the fatal accident caused by excessive speeding and traffic violations.
“The contract between drivers and passengers is to take them safely to their destinations after they have paid not to drive them to their graves.”
He went on to emphasize that drivers must always be patient on the highway, and that the contract between drivers and passengers was to bring them safely to their destination rather than to their graves.
Ibitoye stated that passengers must also participate in road safety by cautioning drivers who constantly throw caution into the air by speeding and breaking traffic laws, and that passengers can report FRSC personnel on the highway.
“This is why everyone must participate in road safety, the passengers too have a role to play by cautioning drivers or reporting them to FRSC personnel on the highway,” he added.
“We appeal to our drivers to always exercise patience on the highway in order to reduce crashes to safe lives and property.”
A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
