Man Contracts Horror Skin Disease From Wearing Second-Hand Clothes

Experts have advised individuals to launder newly purchased clothing prior to wearing it, particularly when sourced from thrift stores, and a TikTok user is discovering firsthand the consequences of ignoring this advice.

As reported by Jam Press, a TikToker known as @‌onenevertwhoo_one, who chose to be identified solely by his social media handle, developed a skin infection from wearing unwashed second-hand garments.

In a video that has since gone viral, he shared that he contracted molluscum contagiosum, a viral skin condition characterized by small, elevated bumps on the skin.

Despite its uncomfortable appearance, the condition is reportedly benign and typically resolves without treatment, according to NeedToKnow.

While this skin infection is commonly transmitted through direct skin contact or sexual activity, the TikToker attributes his condition to his unwashed thrifted clothing.

The content creator’s suspicion may hold merit, as Frances Kozen, a senior lecturer in fiber science and apparel design at Cornell University, explained to Self magazine that clothing is often treated with fabric softeners, stain-resistant or water-repellent coatings, or anti-mildew agents that can trigger irritation, redness, or itching.

The young man’s video, displaying bumps on his face, garnered millions of views and thousands of comments.

Some viewers expressed sympathy: “I hope you get well soon and are as healthy as before.”

Others were puzzled by his oversight.
“Why don’t you wash your clothes first?” one commenter questioned.

Dr. Charles Puza, a board-certified dermatologist based in NYC, also emphasized in a TikTok video the importance of washing new clothes before wearing them, “…especially if you like fast fashion like Shein and Temu.

“They have things on them that you don’t want on your skin,” he said in the video.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
