The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Apocalypse 11:19,12:1-6,10
Psalm 44(45):10-12,16
Luke 1:39-56

Today, we get to celebrate one of the most magnificent feasts dedicated to our Blessed Mother—the Assumption! This incredible event was declared a universal feast by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950, and it forever changed how we honor Mary. He boldly proclaimed, “We pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever-Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” His announcement was like a clarion call, affirming a cherished belief that had lived in the hearts of the faithful for centuries!

What I find truly captivating about this special day is how it draws us into a profound reflection—not just on Mary’s bond with her beloved Son Jesus, but on her unique connection with God the Father. It was He who sent His only Son into our world as our Savior, and He, too, sent the angel Gabriel to invite Mary into the divine mystery of the Incarnation. This beautiful relationship blossomed through God’s loving outreach, and as we celebrate the Assumption, we’re called to contemplate how, after Mary’s earthly journey, God enveloped her in heavenly glory, body and soul. It’s the ultimate testament to God’s wondrous faithfulness!

When people ask about this extraordinary mystery, my simple answer is, “Well, God can do anything, right?” But there’s so much more to explore! The Assumption of Mary, much like the resurrection of Jesus, shines as the ultimate declaration of God’s incredible faithfulness. Our God, who adores us deeply, is right there with us in every moment, just as He was with Jesus and by Mary’s side throughout her life. In times that challenge our faith, we must remember: “Our God is faithful. Our God is faithful!” When we hold onto this truth, we can join our Blessed Mother in joyfully proclaiming those powerful words from her Magnificat: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit finds joy in God my Savior… God who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name!” Let’s celebrate this day with that exuberant spirit!
