Senate Delays Plenary Resumption to October 7, Extends Annual Recess by Two Weeks

In a surprising turn of events, the 10th Senate has announced a further revision to its legislative schedule, pushing back the resumption of plenary sessions from September 23 to October 7, 2025.

This new update, detailed in an internal memo signed by the Chief of Staff to the Senate President, comes with the news of an additional two-week recess, much to the chagrin of lawmakers and constituents alike. The memo, aptly titled “Notice of Shift in Plenary Resumption Date,” included a heartfelt apology from Chief of Staff Akubueze, who recognized that this abrupt change might throw a wrench into the plans of many legislators.

Back in July, the Senate had initially adjourned, scheduling its return for September 23, in a move that was intended to sync with the House of Representatives under the banner of “chamber reciprocity.” Senate President Godswill Akpabio had previously emphasized that this break was crucial for committees to perform their oversight duties, which included vital visits to prisons and engagement with the diaspora.

As the new resumption date draws near, many are left wondering: will Senate leadership be able to regain lost ground and reassure the public that this extended break won’t hinder their essential constitutional responsibilities? Time will tell as we approach October 7.
