AFCON: CAF Increases Prize Money By 40 Percent

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced an official increase of the prize money for the 2023 Arica Cup of Nations, AFCON.

The winner of the biennial competition will go home with $7 million, a $2million increase from the $5 million given to the last champions, Senegal.

The prize for runners-up will now be $4 million as against $2.75 million, while each of the two semi-finalists will receive $2,500,000. Each of the four quarter-finalists will get $1,300,000.

“CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the Prize Money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions.

“We have increased the prize money of the AFCON Winner to USD 7 000 000 which is a 40% increase from the previous AFCON Prize Money.

“I am confident that a portion of the prize money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations,” President of Africa’s soccer governing body, Patrice Motsepe, told CAFonline.

The 34th edition of the AFCON finals will start on Saturday, January 13 with the opening game between hosts Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau. The competition will end on Sunday, February 11.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
