We’ve discussed the benefits and drawbacks of providing smartphones to our children, particularly teenagers. Furthermore, it has been stated that parents determine the appropriate time to introduce smartphones to their children based on family traditions and the child’s level of responsibility.
Children frequently express a strong desire for smartphones, especially as they approach pre-adolescence. Withholding this device may have psychological effects, making them feel out of place among their peers, who may also tease them. As a result, it is recommended that we establish clear guidelines or rules for phone usage in our homes once our children have their phones. It is critical to recognize that these rules will only be effective if we, as parents, adhere to them.
Other guidelines that can be established in our homes to regulate the use of phones:
This can be done by establishing clear rules regarding screen time/ use of phones and ensuring your children understand the consequences of breaking these rules.
Examples are:
i) set daily time limits for screen usage, different times can be set for weekends.
ii) Certain areas of the house should be set as screen screen-free zones to encourage face-to-face interactions and other activities. Examples of such places in the home are the dining room and bedrooms.
iii) Set certain times of the day when screens are not permitted, For example; during meals, before bedtime, or during family activities.
Use parental controls.
Smartphones have parental control features to limit content, app downloads, and screen time. Parental control apps control their children’s internet activities, For instance: an app that helps parents keep track of who their children interact with, what they post, and their overall activity. Parents are encouraged to regularly review and update these settings.
