Saturday of week 13 in Ordinary Time

Amos 9:11-15
Psalm 84(85): 9,11-14
Matthew 9:14-17

It is vital to remember the message in today’s first reading, from the last chapter of the Book of Amos which essentially states what happens when we listen and act on God’s plan. It incorporates a brand new way of living: “I will bring about the restoration of my people Israel; they shall rebuild and inhabit their ruined cities, plant vineyards, and drink wine, set out gardens and eat fruit.

The day and time of the Messiah is also the day and time of restoration and renewal. With the arrival of Christ, the day of salvation has begun, fulfilling God’s perfect plan for our redemption.

In the gospel, Jesus speaks of times when “the bridegroom is taken away,” signifying moments when we feel a loss of connection with Christ. This may stem from our sins or from a deep longing for His presence.

Fasting can serve as a remedy in both cases, helping to release us from sinful attachments and intensifying our hunger for Christ. Through fasting, we can strengthen our will, purify our desires, and deepen our faith and trust in Him.

Fasting at its core, is an act of self-denial and sacrifice for God. It allows us to overcome earthly desires, enabling our spirits to yearn for Christ more deeply. Whatever situation we might be in, recognizing the need for fasting in our lives is essential.

By reflecting on our longing for Christ, we can identify and confront competing desires, offering acts of fasting and self-denial as small sacrifices for God. In doing so, we will witness the positive impact they have on our spiritual lives.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.”
