In response to the rising cases of gender-based violence (GBV) globally, the Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Her Excellency Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, has partnered with the Vision Spring Initiative to train law enforcement officers on broader and internationally recognized standards for addressing GBV.
Speaking at the Police Officers’ Mess Hall in Umuahia during a special training programme for law enforcement officers, Mrs. Otti, who joined virtually, emphasized the need for a more coordinated and strategic approach to responding to sexual violence cases across the state. The training was organized by the Vision Spring Initiative in collaboration with the Office of the Wife of the Governor, the Ministry of Women Affairs, the State Orientation Agency, and with support from the African Women’s Development Fund.
Mrs. Otti described gender-based violence as a grave human rights violation and a societal menace that requires urgent and effective intervention. She underscored the critical role of the police as first responders, noting that timely rescue and protection of victims, as well as the proper collection and preservation of evidence, depend heavily on the capacity and commitment of security personnel.
She further commended the administration of Governor Alex Otti for its unwavering commitment to providing funding for GBV response efforts, particularly for the police, to ensure that justice is not compromised due to inadequate resources.
The First Lady also praised the Abia State Commissioner of Police for his consistent support and expressed gratitude to the Vision Spring Initiative and the African Women’s Development Fund for their partnership and continued investment in the state’s journey to build a safer and more inclusive society.
Mrs. Otti charged participating officers to take the knowledge gained from the training back to their respective duty posts and commands and to apply it diligently in the handling of GBV cases.
In her remarks, the Executive Director of Vision Spring Initiative, Mrs. Ngozi Nwosu Duba, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to promoting gender equality and advocating for the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people and vulnerable groups. She applauded the First Lady’s strong stance and dedication to the protection of women and girls in Abia State.
In a goodwill message, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Isah Danladi, represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Hiatu Shaffat, expressed appreciation to the Vision Spring Initiative for bringing the training to Abia. He assured the organization and the state government of the police force’s continued support in the collective fight against GBV.
The event featured insightful lectures and an interactive question-and-answer session and drew participation from notable figures, including the former Abia FIDA President, Mrs. Amanamba, and other top government officials.
“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
