Abia’s Pride: Dr. Chimezie Okwuonu Shines at World Congress of Nephrology

Dr. Chimezie Okwuonu, Chief Medical Director of Abia State Specialist Hospital, has put Abia State on the global map by representing Nigeria at the prestigious World Congress of Nephrology in Yokohama, Japan. This esteemed event brings together top nephrologists and medical experts worldwide to share knowledge and advancements in kidney care.

Dr. Okwuonu’s participation is a testament to his exceptional work in nephrology, particularly in kidney transplantation and care. He’s a pioneer in Southeast Nigeria, having led the first successful kidney transplant in the region at Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, in 2017.

As a renowned nephrologist, Dr. Okwuonu has made significant contributions to kidney care in Nigeria. He’s developed guidelines for managing chronic kidney disease and has been instrumental in raising awareness about kidney health through his NGO, Beatitudes Kidney Foundation.

Dr. Okwuonu’s research focus on kidney disease, hypertension, and transplantation has earned him international recognition. He’s been selected for the International Society of Nephrology’s Emerging Leaders Programme and Fellowship, a prestigious global opportunity.

His appointment to the Africa Regional Board of the International Society of Nephrology is a milestone in his career, allowing him to contribute to strategic plans and priority programs on kidney disease across Africa.
