An investigation into a fight between Vehicle Inspection Office employees and commercial motorcyclists in Abuja’s Life Camp neighborhood has been launched by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command.
The incident happened on Thursday at around 7 p.m. while the Federal Capital Territory’s ban on commercial motorcyclists operating on major roads and routes was being enforced.
Preliminary investigations, according to the police, showed that a VIO official assigned to a task force established by the Federal Capital Territory Administration to enforce the ban got into a fight with a commercial motorcyclist.
In order to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, Ahmed Sanusi, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation.
The statement read in part, “The attention of the FCT Police Command was drawn to an altercation between personnel of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and commercial motorcyclists (Okada riders) in the Life Camp area of the FCT.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred when a VIO personnel attached to a task force constituted by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to enforce the ban on commercial motorcyclists operating on major roads and routes within the FCT had an altercation with a commercial motorcyclist. The situation subsequently escalated into a confrontation.”
The police urged locals to maintain their composure and carry on with their legal activities, claiming that normalcy had returned to the area.
Additionally, the command urged residents of the Federal Capital Territory to be vigilant about security and to report any suspicious individuals or activities to the closest police station or via its emergency lines, 08032003913 and 08061581938.
