AFCON 2025: Morocco, Senegal, And Mali Advance To Quarter-Finals

Three teams have advanced to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals. With a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tanzania on Sunday, the hosts Morocco are the most recent to guarantee their place, joining Senegal and Mali.

Despite being the overwhelming favorites going into the game, the Atlas Lions had trouble turning their domination into goals for the whole of the match.

Morocco advanced to the round of eight after Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz broke the impasse in the 64th minute with the game-winning goal. He made history by being the first player from Morocco to score in four AFCON games.

Morocco persevered to proceed in spite of Tanzania’s enthusiastic performance. They are presently awaiting the outcome of South Africa and Cameroon’s match, which is scheduled for January 9 or 10.

Senegal, the reigning champions, defeated Sudan 3-1 in Tangier earlier on Saturday to become the first team to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

The Lions of Teranga trailed early but rallied thanks to goals by Pape Gueye (brace) and an assist from Sadio Mane. Ten men Mali’s late equalization versus Tunisia forced extra time and penalties.

El Bilal Toure scored the game-winning penalty, while goalkeeper Djigui Diarra saved two penalty kicks to secure a 3-2 victory.
