A Mini Cooper crashed into a gathering of people in Munich on Thursday morning, February 13, injuring at least 20 people. Bild reports that the driver, who was 26 years old and Afghan, was taken into custody after the event.
Munich Police posted on social media to reassure people that the driver was safe and “does not pose any further danger at this time.”
The event occurs when world defense leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US Vice-President JD Vance, are attending a significant security conference in the Bavarian city.
Around 10:30 a.m., the motorist allegedly sped into protesters associated with the Verdi trade union on Seidlstrasse, injuring at least 20 people, including a child.
According to eyewitnesses, two males were in the Mini when bullets were fired, and the driver was apprehended. Local police have announced on X/Twitter that a large police operation is presently underway.
¹On social media, one witness, a German journalist, stated that the incident left people ‘weeping and shaking’ on the ground.
“A person was lying on the street and a young man was taken away by the police,” Sandra Demmelhuber said.
“People were sitting on the ground, crying and shaking. Details still unclear,” the reporter added.
While police investigate if the motorist intentionally drove into the event, ambulances are on the scene to try to assist the victims who were struck.
“Police investigations must now clarify whether he drove into the crowd intentionally or confused the accelerator and brake,” Bild reported.
A demonstrator told Bayerischer Rundfunk: “I was in the demonstration and saw that a man was lying under the car. Then I tried to open the door, but it was locked’.
“Eventually the police came and shot at the car window, so he retreated and took care of the injured’.
Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter told Bild: “The police chief has just informed me that a vehicle drove into a group of people and unfortunately many people were injured, including children. I am deeply shocked.
“My thoughts are with the injured.”
A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”
