Airlines Reduce Fare Prices As Competition Rises

Due to increased airline competition brought on by the return of two domestic carriers, Aero Contractors and DANA Air, air costs have decreased on major routes in anticipation of year-end travel, often known as Yuletide Traffic in the aviation industry.

Along with the returned carriers, the impact of new airlines like Green Africa Airways and Value Jets Airlines, which are breaking into the aviation industry, is also a factor in the decline in airfare.

According to experts aware of the situation, the decrease in prices could be explained by the availability of more planes and, consequently, more seats for travelers to reserve.

According to The Nation’s investigations, major carriers’ increased capacity on popular routes has also caused fares to drop below what they were a few months ago.

The Nation found cheaper cost regime after checking the websites of some airlines, including Air Peace, AZMAN Air, Max Air, Value Jets, Green Africa Airways, Overland Airways, DANA Air, Arik Air, and Aero Contractors.

Bookings for travel this week on several of the airlines show fierce rivalry in terms of cost and availability.

Two months ago, the minimum ticket for a one-hour journey on major airlines was N74,000. While some carriers on the Lagos-Abuja route offer an hourly rate between N46,500 and N52,500, others offer the same seat for between N55,000 and N80,000.

However, research shows that there is fierce competition among airlines that fly between Lagos and Port Harcourt, with one airline using a rotary-wing propeller aircraft charging between N42,600 and N52,500 for a ticket, while another using a fixed-wing/jet aircraft charges between N55,000 and N59,000.

Fares on the Lagos/Akure route fluctuate between N42,500 and N64,000 every trip. Competition amongst the airlines is much more fierce on Northern routes, including Lagos, Maiduguri, Gombe, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Birnin Kebbi, and others.

On the Lagos to Kano route, one carrier is offering between N60,000 and N65, 000, while another operator is providing between N55, 000 and N60, 000. Prices for the Lagos to Kaduna route range from N70,000 and N75,000.

Prices between Lagos and Sokoto range from N84,500 to N151,000 each way.

One of the airlines’ charges between N78, 000 and N100, 585 in fares for travel between Lagos and Maiduguri. The cost of a ticket for the Lagos to Yola route can range from N85, 739 to N108, 593.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
