All Charges Against Mason Greenwood Has Been Dropped

Mason Greenwood, a football player for Manchester United, has had all accusations against him withdrawn as a result of the “withdrawal of key witnesses.”

The 21-year-old forward was accused of attempted rape, using coercive behaviour, and violence. All three offences were against one woman.

In response to the “withdrawal of key witnesses and additional material that came to light,” the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stated that it had a “duty to stop the case.”

The report added that these changes meant there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”

“In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case. We have explained our decision to all parties.”

The investigation got underway in January 2022, just over a year ago. The date of trial was scheduled for November 27, 2023.

The decision to withdraw the charges, according to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), “had not been taken lightly.”

The GMP’s head of public protection, Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, stated that given the “significant media coverage of this case,” it was “only fair” that the force discloses the most recent development.

She added: “The investigation team has remained in regular contact with the legal team, providing any updates of note, and so understand the rationale for the discontinuation of proceedings at this stage, and that this decision has not been taken lightly.

“Despite the media and public’s interest in this case, we have decided not to comment on it in any further detail.”

Ms Kerr did however appeal to those who felt they were, or might have been, a victim, stressing GMP’s “commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls”.

She continued: “An ever-increasing number of officers are receiving specialist training and the force is more consistently utilising tools, available via the criminal justice system, to keep people safe and care for victims.

“If you feel you are or might be a victim, please don’t let this case put you off asking for help.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United declined to comment when approached by Sky Sports News. United hasn’t lifted Greenwood’s suspension.

He would not participate in any games or training until “further notice,” United stated on January 30 of last year.

In addition, Greenwood’s sponsorship agreement with Nike was put on hold and subsequently terminated, and Electronic Arts revealed that he had been dropped from the active squads of its FIFA 22 game.
