Anambra Government Creates Family Court Specially For Domestic Abuse Cases

A specialized family court has been established by the Anambra State Government to address issues with the state’s rising domestic violence.

This is in response to the widely reported prevalence of domestic violence, one of which resulted in the suspension of Mr Mbazulike Iloka as chairman of the transition committee for the Nnewi North Local Government Area due to the unsettled circumstances surrounding the death of his wife, Chidiebere.

The state government has zero tolerance for domestic violence, according to Mrs Ify Obinabo, the commissioner for women’s affairs, in a Monday office speech to the United Business Women and Farmers Association.

Obinabo stated that the killing of one’s spouse is an abomination and the ministry will continue to see to it that it is brought under control.

She said, “We have 10 cases of domestic violence at our Family Court and out of that number, nine suspects were remanded at the awaiting trial section while one was granted bail.

“But this is not in Anambra State alone and our state has one of the lowest cases of death through domestic violence and this recent one makes it the fifth case.”

The association’s National President, Mrs Nkiru Nwagbo, stated in an earlier speech, “We call on you to help us in building capacity of our members through our various training programmes.

“We have well over 8,000 members in Anambra State who believe in our capacity to resolve their problems through empowerment programmes.”

She applauded Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the state governor, for taking decisive action against the chairman of the Transition Committee, who is accused of killing his wife.

She said, “We also wish to extend our hands of friendship to you in mounting public enlightenment campaigns in the promotion of these ideals engrained in the vision of your Ministry.”

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
