The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has barred politicians and government officials from giving speeches from any of its church’s podiums during worship services.
This decision follows an event a week prior where FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, conducted a thanksgiving service at St James’ Anglican Church in Asokoro, Abuja, to mark the completion of his projects and used the platform to direct verbal attacks at his political rivals.
In a memorandum issued by the Most Revd Dr Henry Ndukuba, Primate of the Church of Nigeria, the Church reiterated its dedication to upholding neutrality and avoiding political favoritism. These guidelines were disclosed during the Episcopal Consultation held in the Diocese of Nike, Enugu.
The Church recognized rising concerns about the politicization of religious assemblies, which it noted could endanger its core principles and sacred purpose.
The Church also prohibited its leaders from commending or exalting political figures in ways that might tarnish the Church’s reputation.
It further emphasized that politicians and government officials must be clearly informed that the Church is not a platform for promoting partisan views or political rhetoric.
“Church leaders and officiants must refrain from making statements or behaving in ways that could be construed as politically aligned or sectional,” the memo added.
The Church underscored that no guest should be permitted to speak from the lectern, which is reserved solely for the proclamation of God’s Word. However, it clarified that politicians and government officials remain welcome to participate in services and Church programs.
“The Church remains committed, under God, to being the light of the world and the salt of the earth,” the memo read, referencing Matthew 5:13–14.
