Apongbon fire: Lagos shuts Eko Bridge, gives 48-hour quit notice to traders

Following the fire incident which gutted some makeshift shops and containers under the Eko Bridge at Oke Arin, Apongbon on Wednesday, the Lagos State Government has shut down the bridge.

Also, the government gave a 48-hour notice to traders and squatters under the Eko Bridge.

The PUNCH had reported that the early morning fire affected some sections of the bridge and caused gridlock in the area

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business Districts , Mr Gbenga Oyerinde, gave the notice at the commencement of the removal of containers and makeshift shops affected by the fire incident to forestall spreading to other parts of the area.

Highlighting the alternative routes, the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde explained that integrity assessment would be carried out to ascertain the level of damage caused by the fire incidence for adequate rehabilitation of the bridge.

Oladeinde advised motorists heading towards Apongbon from Surulere and its environs to use Ijora/Apapa route or Leventis/UBA Roundabout to connect Marina and their desired destinations.

Alternately, he also advised motorists to use Ebute Ero to link Inner Marina and Third Mainland Bridge to continue their journeys.

He empathised with owners of shops razed down during the inferno, assuring that the state government is fully committed to ensuring the safety of the commuting public within the metropolis.
