“Arsenal Must Earn The Right To Be The Premier League Champion”- Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta is adamant that Arsenal must earn the right to be crowned Premier League champions rather than relying on any penalties levied on title rivals Manchester City.

The top two teams will square off at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night as Arsenal leads the holders by five points going into this weekend’s games.

The visitors, who have been charged with more than 100 suspected rule violations, will play in the game under a cloud.

City has denied wrongdoing but could be subject to harsh penalties if an independent committee determines they violated spending restrictions.

Mikel Arteta wants his team to compete for the championship on the field, despite the possibility of point deductions, ejection from the league, and significant financial penalties.

“We have to look after our garden,” he replied when asked if Arsenal has to be prepared to take advantage of any distraction caused at City.

“Let’s focus on what we have to do and win enough football matches for that to happen. We have to earn the right to win it, that’s for sure.”

On the heels of their last two defeats, Arsenal will host Brentford on Saturday before taking on City.

After a close FA Cup loss to City, Arsenal suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat at Everton, their second league loss of the year. Arteta was prepared to use the run as an opportunity to revive Arsenal’s season.

“It’s not about a comfort zone. In football you lose matches,” he said of his players’ reaction to recent setbacks.

“They are very different matches we lost against City and Everton, but losing brings a lot of opportunities to look at other things and see the reaction of the team. The reaction of the team has been superb this week.

“Tomorrow we’re going to put a great performance in, in front of our crowd to try to win the game.

“It (the reaction to Everton) has been positive. Straight away we sat together, what happened and the opponent played their part.

“You have to congratulate the opponent on the day. There are indeed things we didn’t do like in other games and that’s why you lose football matches.

“But it’s always an opportunity to bounce back and show how much we want what we’re fighting for and do it tomorrow.”
