In a recent development, Augustine Eguavoen, the former head coach of Nigeria’s men’s national team, has been appointed as the interim head coach for the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s national team, ahead of their upcoming Olympic qualifiers. This appointment comes in preparation for the crucial matches against Comoros scheduled for October 2028.
The Nigeria Football Federation announced the decision on Tuesday, clarifying that this is a temporary measure while the federation continues its search for a permanent coaching solution for the women’s senior squad. The previous coaching staff, led by Justin Madugu, was dismissed last month to make way for new leadership.
Eguavoen will be supported by Christopher Danjuma, who currently manages Nasarawa Amazons in Nigeria’s Women’s Football League. Danjuma has also served as the coach of Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team, Falconets, during the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup held in Costa Rica.
Joining the coaching team are Olatunji Baruwa, a seasoned former goalkeeper trainer for the Super Eagles, and Ayisat Yusuf, a distinguished former player and coach of the Super Falcons. Yusuf, who represented Nigeria in multiple Africa Women’s Cup of Nations tournaments, FIFA Women’s World Cups, and the 2008 Beijing Olympics, brings extensive experience to her role.
The Super Falcons, Nigeria’s record 10-time African champions, will face off against Comoros in the second round of Olympic qualification.
The matches are slated for October 9 and 13 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo. Nigeria entered the qualifiers directly into this round after finishing among the top three teams in the previous stage, while Comoros advanced after a dominant 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan.
Should Nigeria succeed in overcoming Comoros, they will face either Morocco or the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the third round scheduled from February 23 to March 6, 2027.
Progressing further, the team could meet teams like Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic, or Mali in the fourth round between October 4 and 12, 2027.
The journey concludes with the final qualification matches set for November 23 to December 4, 2027, where Nigeria may encounter strong contenders such as Guinea, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, or others from the African continent.
