Bandits armed with weapons attacked a mosque in Marnona village, located in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, resulting in the death of one worshiper and the kidnapping of several others during morning prayers.
Reports indicate that the assailants, allegedly equipped with advanced firearms, invaded the mosque in the early hours of Sunday, August 10, 2025, and fired indiscriminately at worshipers, causing widespread panic in the community.
The deceased, identified as Alhaji Shu’aibu Marnona, was buried on Monday.
The Sokoto State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Isah Achida, verified the incident on Tuesday.
He denounced the attack, calling it “barbaric” and “an act of cowardice.
“Targeting innocent worshipers in a sacred place is a direct attack on our humanity and our faith. The perpetrators must be brought to justice, and our people must remain united to defeat this menace,” Achida said.
Achida reassured residents that the state government, working alongside security agencies, is taking measures to address banditry throughout Sokoto, while offering condolences to the grieving families and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.
Security sources suspect the attackers may have originated from camps concealed in the forests along the Sokoto and Zamfara state borders, known for sheltering armed groups.
The assailants escaped before security forces reached the scene.
Police spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, stated that the command has initiated an investigation and will provide a comprehensive statement soon.
A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
