Confirming the incident, the BBC spokesperson said in a statement: “The BBC is extremely concerned about the treatment of our journalist Ed Lawrence, who was arrested and handcuffed while covering the protests in Shanghai.

“He was held for several hours before being released. During his arrest, he was beaten and kicked by the police. This happened while he was working as an accredited journalist.”

Zhao Lijian, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, claimed that the BBC’s account of events was inaccurate and that Ed Lawrence failed to identify himself as a reporter or produce any documentation of his press credentials.

Zhao said, “According to our understanding, the BBC’s statement is not true. According to authorities in Shanghai the journalist in question did not reveal his journalist identity at the time, he did not openly show his foreign press card.

“When the incident happened, law enforcement personnel asked people to leave, and when certain people did not cooperate they were taken away from the scene.”

When covering news events in China, foreign reporters are required to carry a government-issued card proving their status as accredited journalists.

Protests against the harsh Covid regulations have been reported in a number of Chinese cities, including Shanghai.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
