Biden Slams Trump During State Of Union Address
The 81-year-old Biden launched into a tirade against the Republican, accusing Trump of “bowling down” to Russian President Vladimir Putin and criticizing him on issues ranging from the economy to abortion.
“Not since President Lincoln and the Civil War, have freedom and democracy been under assault at home as they are today,” he said.
“What makes our moment rare is that freedom and democracy are under attack both at home and overseas.”
During the State of the Union, Joe Biden attacked Donald Trump 13 times as “my predecessor,” making it one of the most pointed attacks on an opponent of the president in history. Biden never mentioned Trump by name.
“I will not bow down,” Trump declared in response to applause from Democrats after he had called into question the US’s commitment to NATO in recent remarks.
Before the election in November, Biden had a rare opportunity to present his case for reelection to his closest political rivals and allies as well as to millions of viewers on national television. This was accomplished through the yearly set-piece presidential speech.
“Four more years.”
At just over an hour long, it was also a high-stakes test of his ability as the oldest ever US president to think — and stay — on his feet.
Biden repeatedly faced jeers and heckling from Republicans, but he responded with humor that made fun of his opponents while maintaining a strong delivery.
Republicans House Speaker Mike Johnson shook his head as Democrats greeted Biden with cries of “four more years” and Vice President Kamala Harris frequently up to welcome him from her seat behind him.
In public polls, 77-year-old Trump leads Biden by a small margin. Nonetheless, he is charged with several felonies in connection with his attempts to reverse the results of his 2020 election and his reluctance to return boxes of top-secret materials after he reluctantly left the White House.
Throughout the address, Trump had promised rebuttals on his social media platform, Truth Social, but all he provided was a mediocre and unreliable answer while the website failed time and time again.
“He looks so angry when he’s talking, which is a trait of people who know they are ‘losing it.’ The anger and shouting is not helpful in bringing our Country back together!” Trump posted.
Biden attacked Republican opponents of abortion in his speech, accusing them of having “no clue about the power of women in America,” on a topic that Democrats believe is crucial to earning support.
