Bola Tinubu Reacts To Election Defeat In Lagos State

According to a poll taken on February 25, 2023, All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu claims that as a Democrat, he must accept the results of the last election.

The success of his Labour Party (LP) rival, Peter Obi, in the state, according to the former governor of Lagos State, demonstrates the virtues of democracy.

Tinubu also urged his supporters to keep their cool and uphold peace, saying Obi’s victory in Lagos shouldn’t be a cause for agitation.

“The APC candidate further stated that as a democrat he is required to accept the outcome of any election, favorable or not,” according to a statement released on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Director of Media & Publicity for the APC Presidential Campaign Council.

The allegations of violence in the state, particularly the reported attacks on several traders of Igbo heritage, caused Tinubu grave anxiety.

Any type of violence against members of any ethnic community in Lagos was denounced by the former governor of Lagos State.

“The fact that the APC narrowly lost Lagos State to another party should not be the reason for violence. As a democrat, you win some, you lose some. We must allow the process to continue unhindered across the country while we maintain peace and decorum,” the statement said.

Obi defeated the former governor of Lagos State, who received 572,606 votes, with a vote total of 582,454. From 1999 to 2007, the state’s governor was based in Lagos. Obi also defeated Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) (NNPP).

Atiku received 75,750 votes and Kwankwaso received 8,442.

Obi won the majority of votes in the state despite Tinubu winning 11 local government areas, including Alimosho, Ojo and Oshodi-Isolo, Kosofe, and Amuwo Odofin, among others. Obi also won nine strong local governments with a large number of voters.

In the state, 1,347,452 votes are accredited, 1,271,451 votes are valid, 64,278 votes are rejected, and 1,335,729 votes were cast in total.
