Bolt Driver Murdered By Gunmen Suspected To Be Customers

Gunmen suspected of being armed robbers assassinated Raphael Toby, a bolt driver, in Rumuibiakani, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Donald Toby, the victim’s younger brother, verified the incident in a Facebook post on Thursday, May 18, 2023.

Donald stated that his brother was shot and killed on Tuesday and that the perpetrators stole the deceased’s vehicle and other personal goods after killing him.

He asked anyone with information to contact him after posting photographs of the deceased’s vehicle on social media. He also urged security services to find the killers and bring them to justice.

In response to the murder, Enefaa Georgewill, the chairman of the Rivers State Civil Society Organization, gave advice to all relevant regulators across the nation to make sure that e-hailing drivers and their passengers are safe during every ride.

Georgewill emphasized the importance of e-hailing companies linking consumers’ bank accounts to their apps to ensure safety and called for an investigation into the issue.

He said: “The Rivers State Civil Society Organization call on the Rivers State Commissioner of Police to checkmate the incessant attacks and killing of drivers of Bolt, Uber and other e-hailing companies in the state.

“For us, the death of Raphael Toby a few days ago is one death too many. We wish to also call on ride-hailing companies in Nigeria to implement a customer verification process to protect their driver.

“Customers’ verification could simply be a bank account number verification from the customers. We are simply saying every Bolt, Uber and other ride-hailing account should have at least one bank account of the customer linked to it.

“Finally, we call on all road transport regulators to ensure that compliance with safety regulations is strictly adhered to. The safety of drivers is equally important as the safety of customers.”
