Burkina Faso Eliminates Visa Fees For Travelers From Africa

In an effort to facilitate the flow of people and goods throughout Africa, Burkina Faso has declared that it will no longer charge visa costs for any African traveler.

“From now on, any citizen from an African country wishing to go to Burkina Faso will not pay any amount to cover visa fees,” said Security Minister Mahamadou Sana after a cabinet meeting chaired by military leader Capt Ibrahim Traoré on Thursday.

Sana explained that travelers still need to apply for a visa online in order for it to be approved.

Along with Ghana, Rwanda, and Kenya, the West African country is facilitating admission for African tourists.

West African nationals can currently enter Burkina Faso without a visa, but this could change since the nation just joined Mali and Niger in leaving the Ecowas regional organization.

The measure displays Burkina Faso’s dedication to Pan-Africanism and will, according to a statement from the junta’s information office. “help promote tourism and Burkinabe culture, and improve Burkina Faso’s visibility abroad.”

Capt. Traoré, who was overthrown in a coup in 2022, has portrayed himself as a Pan-Africanist leader, despite his autocratic governance and a worsening Islamist insurgency.
