The Canadian government has ordered TikTok to cease operations in Canada, including the closure of its offices in Toronto and Vancouver.
Despite the office closings, Canadian users will still be able to access the app.
The decision was made after a national security evaluation conducted by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).
François-Philippe Champagne, the Minister of Innovation, declared that TikTok’s activities presented a threat to national security, but declined to disclose specifics.
TikTok has strongly opposed the injunction, pledging to challenge it in court.
A spokesperson for TikTok argued that the closure will lead to significant job losses and stated, “Shutting down TikTok’s Canadian offices and destroying hundreds of well-paying local jobs is not in anyone’s best interest.”
The decision follows Canada’s earlier TikTok limitations, which included a ban on government-issued smartphones in 2023 because to privacy and security concerns.
ByteDance, TikTok’s parent business, has under similar attention from the US government, which has explored additional restrictions due to national security concerns.
TikTok said it will continue to service Canadian users on its platform, enabling creators to connect and companies to function.
However, the dispute between TikTok and Canadian authorities reflects longstanding difficulties between countries and the app’s Chinese parent corporation.
