China Imposes Visa Restrictions On Select US Officials Over Tibet Dispute

China has imposed visa restrictions on select US officials in response to Washington’s measures over access to Tibet.

China announced on Monday that it will impose visa restrictions on select US personnel in response to what it described as “bad behaviour” related to Tibet. The move was confirmed by the Chinese foreign ministry during a regular press briefing.

The decision comes shortly after the United States introduced additional visa restrictions targeting Chinese officials involved in limiting access for foreigners to the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The tit-for-tat measures highlight ongoing tensions between Beijing and Washington over human rights and transparency in Tibet, a region where China maintains tight control and restricts foreign access. The US has long criticised China’s policies in the region, including alleged suppression of religious and cultural freedoms.

Beijing has consistently rejected foreign criticism, claiming its policies in Tibet promote development and stability. In its latest response, China did not specify which US individuals would be affected or the exact nature of their alleged misconduct

The exchange of visa restrictions marks another flashpoint in the broader geopolitical rivalry between the two global powers.
