Court Orders Final Forfeiture Of Achimugu’s N8.9BN Assets To FG

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo, Abuja, on Thursday ordered the final forfeiture of assets worth about N8.9 billion linked to businesswoman Aisha Achimugu to the Federal Government.

Justice Jude Onwugbuzie delivered judgment on an application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission seeking the final forfeiture. The assets forfeited include jewellery valued at N4.65 billion, 11 exotic vehicles worth N4.29 billion, $50,000, and N30 million in cash.

The EFCC had urged the court to permanently forfeit the properties to the Federal Government, arguing that they were linked to unlawful activities. The commission told the court that the assets were proceeds connected to financial crimes under investigation.

After considering the EFCC’s application, Justice Onwugbuzie granted the request and ordered that the jewellery, vehicles, and cash be finally forfeited to the Federal Government. The order gives the government full legal ownership of the listed items.

The forfeiture marks a significant step in the EFCC’s ongoing anti-corruption drive targeting high-value assets suspected to be proceeds of crime. Legal experts note that final forfeiture orders allow the government to dispose of or manage such assets after due process.

The court did not give further details on the substantive case against Achimugu during Thursday’s proceedings. The EFCC is expected to provide additional updates as investigations continue. Details of how the forfeited assets will be disposed of are also expected to be announced later.
