Ayodele Fayose, a former governor of Ekiti State and recently appointed chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), has connected Nigeria’s inadequate electricity supply to the country’s population growth.
During his inauguration as chairman of the REA governing board on Friday in Abuja, Fayose made the declaration. President Bola Tinubu appointed him as part of a larger group of federal agency appointments that were announced in July.
He said: “When you don’t address the issue of electricity, by 7 o’clock it gets dark, and people start engaging with their wives, so the population doubles.”
“The simple problem is that, because there is no electricity, people go to bed early. Their minds are already prepared for it. If this is the only option available, they simply stay at home,”
“But if we address the electricity problem, there will be nightlife,”
While the situation is quite amusing, it’s important to remember that constant darkness is not a solution. People deserve reliable power to live and work comfortably. Nigeria needs to prioritize improving its power supply so that no one has to endure the inconvenience of frequent outages. Bright days ahead depend on better energy solutions, not just humor.
