Deborah Samuel: Catholic Priest Questions Buhari, Tambuwal And Police

The police, President Buhari, and Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal have come under fire from Nigerian Catholic priest Rev. Kelvin Ugwu for their failure to bring Deborah Samuel’s killers to justice.

On May 12, 2022, angry youths, some of whom were reported to be her classmates, attacked the 200-level home economics student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, with stones and set her ablaze over blasphemy accusations.

The police detained two individuals and later remanded them in custody: Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunci.

According to DSP Sanusi Abubakar, the Sokoto State Police Command’s spokesperson in August 2022, individuals who were detained and charged were not the main suspects in the violent disturbance but rather were among those who orchestrated it.

According to the PPRO, “efforts are being intensified to arrest the prime suspects.”

Rev. Ugwu made a demand for information about the case’s status in a Facebook post on the night of the grisly murder anniversary of Deborah.

“Tomorrow the 12th of May will make it exactly one year since the young Christian lady Ms Deborah was brutally killed by her fellow students and burnt to ashes in Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto, over an alleged and unsubstantiated blasphemy or insult to prophet Muhammad (PBUH),” he wrote.

“I am asking the Governor of Sokoto, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, please sir, where are the killers of Deborah? Have you found them? Where did you keep them? What did you do to them?

“I am asking President Muhammadu Buhari, where are the killers? Are they invisible? Have they been arrested?

“And to the Nigeria Police Force, what has happened to the swiftness you normally employ in arresting people who make posts on social media you consider inciting and divisive? What did you to do the killers of Ms. Deborah? Where are the killers?”
