Diesel Theft Gone Wrong: Two Killed as Troops Foil Heist in Akwa Ibom

Troops from the 2 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have foiled a diesel theft attempt at Sterling Petroleum and Fertiliser Company in Ukpe Ette, Akwa Ibom State, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The incident occurred when soldiers received a tip-off about criminal elements siphoning diesel from the company’s heavy-duty equipment.

The troops, acting on the information, moved to the scene and apprehended a driver involved in the theft. However, youths from the community allegedly barricaded the road, attempting to free the suspect and retrieve the stolen diesel. The situation escalated, with the youths hurling stones and bottles at the troops, who fired warning shots to disperse the crowd.

Despite efforts to de-escalate the situation, the crowd became increasingly violent, leading to the identification and shooting of the ringleader in the leg. He was later evacuated to a hospital for treatment. The troops also discovered an unidentified corpse with a coffin placed beside it, which was taken to the mortuary.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the incident and launched an investigation into the matter. The authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control and urged residents to provide actionable intelligence to security agencies.

The incident has sparked tension in the community, with residents expressing outrage and concern. The Sterling Petroleum and Fertiliser Company has not issued an official statement on the matter.

The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Akwa Ibom State, urging residents to support security agencies in maintaining peace and stability.
