Disgraced Harvey Weinstein Will Be Sentenced Next Month

On February 23, a judge in Los Angeles will sentence Harvey Weinstein on three charges of rape and s*xual assault, the judge announced on Monday.

In addition to the 23 years he is already serving for his conviction in New York, Weinstein, 70, faces up to 18 years in prison on the new allegations. Initially, his attorneys requested that he be sentenced on Monday; but, they requested a postponement last week so that they would have more time to submit a motion for a new trial.

On December 19, Weinstein was found guilty of raping a model known as Jane Doe 1 in court. At the sentencing hearing, she is due to deliver a “victim impact statement.”

In addition to acquitting him of a charge relating to a fourth lady, the jury reached a deadlock on three counts involving two additional victims.

On the three counts that left the jury deadlocked, the prosecution has not yet decided whether to retry Weinstein. Outside of court, the prosecutor, Paul Thompson, stated that no timetable has yet been set for such a choice.

In a brief exchange, he agreed to forego the dates outlined in the law for his punishment and a fresh trial. The defense has until January 31 to submit its motion for a new trial as well as its opinion regarding the appropriate sentence. The prosecution has until February 14 to reply.

Lench stated that she anticipated the sentencing to occur on February 23.
