Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has unveiled the rebuilt POWA complex and donated N200m to victims of a recent fire incident in Jattu Market, Etsako West Local Government Area. The fire, which occurred in January 2025, destroyed numerous shops and goods worth millions of naira, leaving many traders in distress.
The governor’s gesture is part of his administration’s commitment to supporting Edo residents facing medical emergencies and financial difficulties. The N200m donation is aimed at alleviating the plight of traders who lost their livelihoods in the fire.
During the cash disbursement event, Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA) Executive Secretary, Jerry Idahosa, emphasized that the compensation was based on a thorough assessment of the damage suffered by traders. Fourteen traders who suffered significant losses were identified and provided with financial assistance to help them rebuild.
Governor Okpebholo has also been paying medical bills for fire victims and others at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital. He visited the hospital and settled bills for several patients, including a pregnant woman and her husband who were severely burned in a fire incident.
The governor’s intervention has brought relief to affected traders, who expressed gratitude for the timely support. Madam Esther, a beneficiary, said, “I thought all hope was lost when I saw my shop burnt to the ground. But today, the government has shown that they truly care”.
The Edo State Government has also assured traders that efforts are ongoing to prevent future fire outbreaks in markets across the state. Plans are being put in place to improve fire safety measures, enhance emergency response capabilities, and support affected traders with long-term recovery strategies.
The rebuilding of the POWA complex and donation to fire victims demonstrate Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to the welfare of the Edo people. The state government continues to work towards ensuring access to healthcare and alleviating the financial strain on families during critical times.
