EFCC Denies List Of Former Governors Under Investigation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted rumours that it has made public a list of previous governors who are being looked into for potential misconduct.

A rumoured list of 58 former governors who embezzled N2.187 trillion, allegedly provided by the commission, circulated on social media on Saturday, May 4.

This amount does not include properties that are under investigation and those that have been confiscated globally, which worths billions of Naira.

The N2.2 trillion plundered is equal to the N2.25 trillion budget for Lagos State in 2024 and the N2.29 trillion budget for all of the South-East states in 2024.

It exceeds the 2024 budgets of the North-East (N1.60 trillion) and the North-Central states (N1.89 trillion) by several billions.

However, this afternoon, May 5, the anti-graft agency posted a statement on its social media handles stating that the list is not from the commission and therefore to be ignored.

Read the statement below: “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, feels obliged to dissociate itself from a phantom report circulating in sections of the media claiming it has released a full list of ex-governors being investigated for alleged corruption.”

The report headlined: “EFCC Releases Full List of 58 Ex-Governors that Embezzled N2 .187 Trillion”, in one of the news outlets, is false and mischievous as the Commission neither issued the said list nor entertained discussions on an investigation of ex-governors with any news medium.

“This invariably means that the so-called list is a disingenuous fabrication designed to achieve motives known only to the authors.

“The public is enjoined to ignore the report as it is false and misleading.

“The media is advised to endeavour to crosscheck facts pertaining to matters under investigation with the Commission to avoid misleading the public with false and inaccurate reports.”

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
