EFCC Explains Why Willie Obiano's Crime Has Not Been Revealed

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained why the former governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has yet to be charged with a crime.

The reason, according to the EFCC, is that there is a current investigation.

Remember that on Thursday, the immediate former governor of Anambra State was arrested at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammad International Airport.

Obiano was arrested just hours after Charles Soludo was sworn in as the new governor of the state.

Obiano was allegedly on his way to the United States when he was picked up at the airport, according to reports.

When asked about the former governor’s detention, the commission’s spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said it was not the right moment to disclose his crime.

Uwujaren said, “We are not giving that (the offense) out at the moment. The matter is still under investigation. It is also not correct that he has been released. He is with the commission.”

He also said that journalists will be notified when the former governor was released from custody.

Obiano had been on the anti-graft agency’s monitoring list since November of last year.

In a letter dated November 15, 2021, the commission demanded that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) put Obiano on a watchlist and notify the agency if he travels out of the country via any international airports or other points of entrance and exit.
