“Eguavoen May Remain Permanent Coach If The Eagles Win The AFCON” – Pinnick

Amaju Pinnick, the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, has hinted that Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoen could keep his post if Nigeria wins the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Following the sack of the long-served German coach Gernot Rohr in December ahead of the AFCON, Eguavoen, 56, was made the caretaker of the team.

Before being invited to replace Rohr and fill in until Portugal’s Jose Peseiro takes over as the new Super Eagles coach, Eguavoen worked as the Nigeria Football Federation’s technical director.

Peseiro, who has previously coached Sporting, Al Ahly of Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, is set to begin work after the Cup of Nations. He’ll be in charge of assuring Nigeria’s World Cup qualification.

NFF president Amaju Pinnick, on the other hand, hinted that Eguavoen would keep his job if Nigeria wins the cup in Cameroon.

He said, “We know that Eguavoen can do the job expertly, but we also know that he will be more useful controlling the technical department.

“If Eguavoen wins the Cup of Nations, we might have a rethink. In that case, the foreign coach would become the technical director,” the NFF boss said to AFP.

He said to NFFTV this week, “It is important for us to sustain the winning mentality while we keep our heads on our shoulders.

“We are yet to win anything here except points.”
