Egypt Resumes Commercial Airline Operations To Sudan

For the first time since a catastrophic conflict broke out between Sudan’s rival factions early this year, Egypt resumed direct commercial flights to Sudan on Tuesday.

The general consul of Egypt welcomed a flight on Tuesday in Port Sudan, a city on the coast of Sudan. The aircraft was handled by EgyptAir, the country’s official airline. He announced that EgyptAir would run a weekly nonstop service to Port Sudan.

After meeting with President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in Egypt a week prior, the military chief of Sudan Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan resumed flying.

The Sudanese president has not traveled outside of his country before the outbreak of hostilities in April. The military controls Port Sudan, which has been mostly spared from conflict and has evolved into Sudan’s primary entrance point for relief shipments and aircraft.
