Elon Musk Sacks 200 Twitter Employees

Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, announced that the company is seeing a “massive drop in revenue” and that he has fired at least 200 employees.

The New York Times (NYT) reported late on Sunday that the job cuts over the weekend represent about 10% of Twitter Inc.’s workforce. It also stated that this is the most recent round of layoffs since Elon Musk assumed control of the social media platform in October.

Elon Musk tweeted on Monday: “Hope you have a good Sunday. First day of the rest of your life.”

The most recent layoffs targeted product managers, data scientists, and engineers; among them was Esther Crawford, a product manager and avid defender of Elon Musk who oversaw the introduction of Twitter Blue, a paid membership service.

The layoffs affected the most individuals at the company since half of the workforce was laid off in November of last year.

They realized they were about to lose their jobs when they were unable to gain access to their work computers or email accounts.

At a meeting in late November, Musk assured staff members that no further staff reductions were in the plans. However, the staff began to worry that another round of layoffs might occur this month after unexpectedly losing access to their Slack channel the previous week.

Some people discovered they had been logged out of their laptops and emails on Saturday night.

According to the New York Times, the most recent layoffs mostly affected product managers like Crawford, as well as data scientists and engineers who focused on machine learning and site reliability.

The staff used an anonymous website for verified employees to describe the cuts as they happened over the weekend.

“People receive an email at 2 am on Saturday and access is cut immediately. This will go down as one of the most extreme layoffs in entire corporate history,” read a post on Blind.

According to the poster, the project management department was severely hit by layoffs, which also affected sales and marketing, engineering, and finance.

Crawford, who founded a small screen-sharing and video chat business called Squad before joining Twitter and which Twitter later purchased in 2020, was one of those fired.

In addition, Twitter fired Haraldur Thorleifsson, who founded the design firm Ueno, which the company acquired in 2021.

Senior project manager Martijn de Kuijper claimed he learned of his dismissal after being locked out of his email account.

Some have speculated that Musk is getting ready to bring in whole new teams in light of the firing of a large portion of the product team.

“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”
