Elon Musk Says He’s Buying Manchester United

Tesla boss; Elon Musk has tweeted that he is buying Manchester United, telling his followers: “You’re welcome.”

Musk commented early Wednesday morning through his official Twitter handle. This came after he declared support for half Republican Party and Democrats.

“Also, I’m buying Manchester United,” the billionaire posted in the tweet which has since gone viral.

Musk’s tweet sent at 1 a.m. UK time on Wednesday when British officials and PR staff were likely to be asleep, gave no details and was the latest in a long line of unsubstantiated “announcements”.

In 2018, he falsely claimed he had “funding secured” to delist his electric car company, Tesla, from the stock market, leading to a total fine of $40 million on him and the firm by US financial regulators.

Well, it later turns out that his tweet to buy Manchester United was a joke.

The SpaceX tycoon has a history of joke announcements and claims about his business deals that don’t progress.

Shares in Manchester United are publicly traded on the stock exchange, but the American Glazer family reportedly retained a controlling stake.

The Glazers bought the storied football team in 2005 in a controversial £790m takeover, largely funded by loans that were loaded onto the club itself. Since then the team has struggled to equal its former sporting glory, and has not won the English Premier League since the 2012–13 season. Manchester United currently sit bottom of the Premier League table on zero points after losing their opening two matches with a goal scored.

Manchester United is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Musk’s tweet will surely attract attention from regulatory authorities.

The Red Devils are valued at $4.6 billion according to Forbes. Mr. Musk, who is estimated to be the richest person on earth with a fortune of $267bn, can easily afford to buy Manchester United.
