Elton John: Legalising Cannabis Is One Of The Greatest Mistakes Ever Made

Sir Elton John, who was voted Time magazine’s icon of the year, has criticised the legalisation of marijuana in some regions of North America, calling it “one of the greatest mistakes of all time.”

The artist, who has been sober for 34 years and ended his performing career last year, has assisted other celebrities in their addiction recovery, including Robbie Williams and Eminem.

It is “tough to hear” how awful your behaviour has gotten, John told Time, adding that acknowledging this helped him get clean. Cannabis is “addictive,” he stated, adding that it “leads to other drugs.”

He added that marijuana is “addictive”, and said: “It leads to other drugs. And when you’re stoned — and I’ve been stoned — you don’t think normally.

In a 1999 interview with Sir David Frost, John revealed that marijuana was the source of his throat issues halfway through an Australian tour in the mid-1980s. He also stated that he had stopped using the drug on the recommendation of medical professionals. Cannabis is legal in Canada starting at age 18, though there are limits on how much people can own and share.

Although operating a cannabis business is restricted in some US jurisdictions, such as California, it has been allowed for recreational use by those 21 and older since 2018.

John also talked about his “short fuse,” stating that he can lose it “if I’m tired, if I’m exhausted, if I’m overwhelmed.” Tantrums And Tiaras, a documentary from the 1990s, examined this topic.

The movie, which was shot over a year by his partner David Furnish, demonstrated how John frequently lost his temper and almost left a video shoot because his clothes were late.

John stated, “I dislike having that temperament, but it’s usually finished in five or ten minutes.”David can tell you that I have a very short fuse, and the worst part about my temper is that he’s extremely reasonable about things, so he’ll explain them, which will only make me more irate.

John says, “But it’s really effortless,” attributing his ability to write music quickly to his short fuse. When I look at a lyric, the music immediately comes to mind. A new documentary is being produced by Furnish and RJ Cutler.

Elton John: Never Too Late, which captures the veteran singer preparing for his final concert in North America at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, having performed two sold-out concerts at the venue in 1975.

He concluded his 330-date Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour with an emotionally dramatic event in Stockholm, Sweden, and his headline appearance at Glastonbury last year was his final UK engagement.

John became the 19th singer to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony earlier this year, earning the coveted EGOT distinction. In September, he revealed on Instagram that an infection he suffered throughout the summer had impaired his eyesight in his right eye.
