Fake American Soldier Bags Two Years Jail Term In Kaduna

Jesse Joshua Kassah (alias Devaun Smith Wayne), a fake American soldier was convicted and sentenced to two years in jail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s Kaduna Zonal Command.

Kassah was sentenced to prison by Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court in Kaduna after pleading guilty to a one-count charge touching on impersonation when arraigned by the EFCC’s Kaduna Zonal Command.

The lone count charge reads; “That you, Jesse Joshua Kassah (a.k.a Devaun Smith Wayne), (M) between January to October 2023 at Kaduna within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, committed an offence, to wit; falsely presented yourself as Devaun Smith Wayne; a USA military personnel and ticket salesman on Facebook (an online social media application) to one Caitlin Morgan and which pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 142(1) of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.”

When the charge was read to him, he pleaded guilty. Given the defendant’s plea, prosecuting attorney M. Arumemi requested the court to convict and sentence him appropriately.

Following that, Justice Khobo convicted and sentenced Kassah to two years in prison with a fine of N150,000.00 (One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira). The Judge further ordered that the Samsung Galaxy A02 phone used to conduct the crime be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Kassah’s path to the Correctional Centre began when he was detained in Kaduna’s Karji neighbourhood for internet-related charges. According to investigations, he impersonated an American soldier, Devaun Smith Wayne, and used his name to scam his victims.
