Fake Soldier Bags Jail Time For Impersonation

A Grade I Area Court in Dei-Dei, Abuja, sentenced 31-year-old Lawal Babangida to six months in prison for impersonating a soldier on Thursday, December 14.

Babangida, who lives in Abuja’s Tungamaji community, has been charged with impersonation, criminal intimidation, and extortion.

The fake soldier pleaded guilty to the accusation and begged the judge for mercy.

“Please forgive me my lord, I plead for mercy sir. I will not commit any crime again,” Babangida said.

However, the Area Court judge, Saminu Suleiman, provided the guilty the option of paying an N6,000 fine.

After serving their sentence, the convict was advised by the judge not to commit another crime.

Chinedu Ogada, the prosecutor, informed the court that on November 11, complainant Usman Zaiyanu of Tomato Junction Zuba Abuja reported the incident to Zuba Police Station.

Mr. Ogade stated that the convict approached the complainant near Zuba Tomato Junction around 9:30 p.m. on the same date and introduced himself as a military officer.

According to the prosecutor, the convict illegally threatened the complainant and stole his cell phone and N10,000 in cash.

According to Ogada, the convict made confessional remarks during police investigations, and the offence violated Sections 132, 321, and 292 of the Criminal Code.
